I met Melanie in one of the Dance for PD classes, which Brooklyn Parkinson Group spawned, at Mark Morris Dance Center, and saw that she was always observing; not just the dancers leading the class so that she could follow, but fellow students as well. I could see her mind was always active. And Melanie had a bit of a smile on her face whenever I saw her. In dance class, in response to a joke or bit of musical accompaniment that she obviously liked, her whole face blossomed into a radiant smile that warmed the whole studio. It became clear to me from a few conversations that Melanie had a strong belief in justice and was interested in Jewish concerns. I did not know about her professional life or what a big impact she had on her students and community groups with which she was involved. Melanie and Leslie, who was a constant support to Melanie, were quiet, active supporters of the mission of Brooklyn Parkinson Group. From the remembrances I’ve read, Melanie was also a leading activist. A full and loving life. I am warmed by thinking of her calm demeanor and lovely smile.
